Sharing (A Winter Giveaway)

There are never enough sides of me.  When we gather on the couch to read, inevitably a mostly-friendly skirmish breaks out as to who gets the coveted seat to my right.  Why the right?  I'm not sure, but it is the prized spot.  Next comes my left side.  And then someone has to take the dreaded spots to the side of the one who claimed the best seat.  Or a particularly creative boy drapes across the top of the couch and leans over my shoulder.  (Of course, Mama's lap is a special seat, too, but it is most frequently filled with Benjamin!)

Sometimes we sprawl on the floor just to avoid the anguish of seat-picking, but nothing beats being squished together on the couch.

Sometimes in warmer weather we read outside, but nothing beats snuggling under a blanket inside.  Memories are made here.

We continued reading through our week of sickness, though the arrangements changed from day to day.  On the day when I was flat in bed, Brian took over book duties.  (He does the funny voices so much better that I do!) When Gavin took his turn in bed and was having an especially feel-bad moment, I took a special book up to him and the two of us shared a story together.  Memories were made this week, too, though we prefer the less-germy ones!

Care to make your own memories and add to your library?  I am giving away a hardback copy of Charles Dickens and Friends by Marcia Williams.  Williams' book is written in comic-book style with sepia-toned illustations and features five Dickens' classics: Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield,  and A Christmas Carol.  Recommended for elementary-aged children.

  1. I love your book suggestions. I never would have thought that Dickens can be a comic book. Sweet!

  3. We love reading on the couch, too. However, these days it seems like a lot of our reading is done in the bathroom while Jonathn sits on the potty (the joys of potty training)

  8. Favorite place for me to read has always been - in bed. I like to be propped up on two pillows and nice and warm when I'm reading. When I'm reading to the kids we are usually sitting on the couch - me in the middle and one kid on each side practically sitting on top of me as they lean in to read along as I read out loud.

  10. Couch is also a favorite here with limited and high demand side seating:) When I am solo, I love to read in bed but since having children, I only last about 10 minutes before hitting myself in the face with book from falling asleep! Would love a new book to share with the kiddos, thanks!

  17. Together...the couch, everyone can see the pictures much better that way.

By myself...usually in bed, unless it's warm and sunny, then outside. :)

  21. I have to pick just one favorite place? Growing up, I loved lying on my horse's back outside and reading. Now with six children, we don't all fit on a horse, so we do the same as you, complete with the child draped across the back of the couch. We frequently read with hot tea in nearby mugs, so then we are spread throughout the kitchen where our littlest destroyer can't reach books. We were sick this week, too, but had books on tape and rented documentaries--Mama was so tired.

  23. I used to read in all the conventional places: at a desk, on the couch, in bed. However, now that I have a precious little grand daughter, a whole world of adventure has opened up! At any moment we could choose to start a book. Sometimes it is on a cushion in the floor among big blocks and her favorite stuffed friends. Another time it will be with a pile of cushions and a blanket in a corner. Once we even read a book while she perched delicately on top of the dryer after watching Nana fold fresh laundry! I anxiously look forward to the places that she finds for us to read. But the best place of all is anywhere that my Sweet Pea settles in my arms long enough to hear a spun tale.

  29. Welcome back!!

I love to read cuddled on the couch with my littles too... but it always seems so hard to get up off of it at the end... or when the phone rings etc.

    Thanks!

  35. Very cool! Dickens in comic book?!?!? Would love to introduce the kids to Dickens now in this way! And definitely, the couch wins out in our house, and yes, that's with one on each side, one on a lap and one across the back playing with mommy's hair :)

  37. My favorite place to read is in the solitude of my bedroom, with hot tea by my side. After a long day however, the reading doesn't last very long!! Thanks so much for the chance!!

  38. I imagine this contest is over, but wanted to say thanks for the recommendation of this. My husband brought home a BBC video series for Charles Dickens. He thought I'd be thrilled, which I was. We were watching Oliver Twist and there was a wacko guy on it that kept getting angry & then having seizures. Scared the kids & me, too. We can't watch it & now they don't care for Charles Dickens very much. LOL So, maybe this will help us. :) Holly
P.S. My favorite place to read is wherever I happen to be!

  39. My favorite place to read is in my daughter's bed with both of my daughters. This tradition began 7 years ago when my oldest was just a few months old. She didn't care much for sleep at night and the only way to keep her quiet was to read Good Night Moon. I can still recite that book by heart. I remember closing my eyes, because I was so tired, and reciting the words still turning the pages at the appropriate time. To this day, my girls love a good bedtime story.
