By the end of our school year in May, we had ticked off a large portion of the read-aloud list that I started in January.  Though we always enjoy our time reading together, it seemed as though we were rushing from one book to another, without savoring anything!

I need to gasp a breath of fresh air this summer...and get the fun back in our reading.

A few summers ago, we had a blast reading through the entire Mr. Putter and Tabby seriesso this summer I plan to read all 28 books of the Henry and Mudge series in order.  They are short enough to read in one sitting and engage all 5 of my children at the same time!  We've read most of them at some point but never in order and it is fun to see a series unfold as the author wrote it.  The kids are putting in their requests for the Poppleton series and the Annie and Snowball series, too!

Also I've asked the kids what longer chapter books they would like to read this summer during our leisure time.  They requested the next book in a series we left hanging (Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Farm), a reread of a favorite (Ramona's World), and a nature story (The Adventures of Sammy Jay)

I'm looking forward to taking it easy with our books and our reading list!

What are you planning to read to your kids this summer?

  1. I am planning to read to my kids this summer. We usually take summer off, with just a bit of math and independent reading but I have missed reading aloud with them. I've never seen the Mr. Putter books and am going to check the library for them or I will just buy them. I have a 3 year old granddaughter here also and I want to spend more time reading with her!

  2. Right now we're working on The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. Next up is A Nest for Celeste. They are also listening to the Fablehaven series during quiet time and bed time.

  3. The Mr. Putter books are some of my absolute favorite! Even as an adult, I love the stories. So simple, but so engaging. I was reading one to my 2-, 4-, and 6-year-olds the other day and before I was done, the 8- and 10-year-olds were hanging over my shoulder. :-)

I've never heard of The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. I'll have to look into that one!

  4. We also love the Mr. Putter books. We've read most of them, but I love the idea of reading them all in order. I might grab some for Tim's nightly reading since he's almost finished with his series :)

  5. What series is Tim reading with the kids? For awhile Brian read some of the Burgess animal books with the kids and then last winter, he read a few Hardy Boys books to the older kids. I'm hoping he reads to them again, but he feels like he is too busy right now to keep up with it.

  6. He just finished book 9 of the Adventures in Odyssey Imagination Station Series. There are only 12 total and I'm still trying to track down book 10.

  7. My kids and I had a great time reading the Mrs. PiggleWiggle books! they would laugh out loud!
The other day I was reading 100 Dresses to my 8 & 10 yr old girls at the kitchen table. My 17 y/o son was also in the kitchen- not seeming to pay any attention. But when we got to the part where the author said that the only other child in school with a funny name was "willie bounce"...he laughed out loud! They all laughed repeating "Will He Bounce"- reading aloud builds memories for all ages :-)
    thanks for the book suggestions!
