"Beware, You Baby Trainers" (a tongue in cheek take on sleeping through the night)

If you are mom, you know the infamous question: is your baby sleeping through the night yet?  It is like a rite of passage.  Your baby does not achieve "good baby" status until he sleeps from evening until morning without waking.  My first four babies slept in my bed and didn't begin to sleep through until around eighteen months old.  Alaine was our first baby who preferred her own bed and began sleeping all night well before she turned a year old.  Having the baby sleep for eleven straight hours equals a full night of rest for Dad and Mom, right?!

It's a myth, I tell ya!

Last night I put Alaine to bed at 7:30.  Benjamin and Owen followed a little after 8.  At 8:45, a large boy-shaped shadow appears on the wall, but when I call out a name, the shadow disappears and a bed spring creaks.  At 9:15, a voice whispers my name and I go into the boys' bedroom to lay down the law.  Brian and I go to bed several hours later (we are night owls!), but sometime in the night, Owen arrives at my bedside and crawls in beside me.  He's cold so I bundle the covers around him.  After having him toss and turn for too long beside me, he kicks up his legs and says, "I'm hot with all these blankets!"  I whisper to him that it is time to go back to his own bed.  "Okay," he says, "but I need a drink and some music first."  I peek at the clock and, though it is still dark, realize that it is close to morning and too much commotion will wake Alaine so I send him back to bed without his requests.

As I drift off to sleep, Owen returns and says, "I just have one question."  I ignore him, hoping he'll go away.  He repeats, "I just have one question...where is Ben?"

"Is he not in your bed?" I ask.  When he answers no, I stumble out of my bed and walk across the house to the boys' bedroom when I discover that not only is Ben not in bed, he is not in the room!  I'm slightly startled by this discovery, but having forgotten to grab my glasses from the bedside table, I'm feeling a considerable handicap.  (Without my glasses, my vision is 20/400.)  By this time, Gavin is whispering from his top bunk, wondering why we are up.  I ask one of the boys to find me a flashlight so I have light to aid my blindness.  Owen finds one under the Christmas tree and I begin my search.  I look in the closet and under the bed. I look in Maddie's room.  I look in the living room and on the sofa.  I look in the dining room, growing more frantic all the time.

Finally, I shine the light into my bedroom and walk around the bed to Brian's side.  There lies Ben asleep on the floor.  I turn off the flashlight, tell the older boys that their little brother is safe and well, then I flop back in bed for an hour...before Alaine wakes for the day.

Sleep through the night?!  It's a myth, I tell ya!

A Tuesday

We ushered in Christmas week with a flurry of excitement.  We finished up school work and put the (school) books away until February.  Brian worked his last day of work for the season and put his work boots and lunch box away until February.  We visited the Christmas lights display at the beach, had our just-the-seven-of-us Christmas dinner, cleaned the house from one side to the other, and had our Christmas Eve game-playing marathon.  Then we had a whirlwind Christmas Day of visiting with my family and Brian's.

This week, we are welcoming a slower pace, though it is hard to develop a new normal after all the excitement of the holiday.  Today the kids begged Brian and me to play each other in The Game of Life on Wii.  I zoomed around in my cartoon car, with a doctor's salary and no children.  Brian worked at a much lower salary and had four kids.  When it was clear I was going to win, I said, "Well, you're broke as a joke with a car full of kids.

"Yep," he laughed.  "That's the story of my life."

Skills I've Acquired as a Mom

Before I had kids, I graduated high school and went to college for two years to get my associates degree.  I worked at the public library for three years and at a college library for two more years.  Becoming a mom almost nine years ago, though, required a whole new set of skills that none of my other life-experiences had prepared me for.

I am proud to say that I can now:
  1. Sweep the floor, vacuum, and cook dinner with one arm.
  2. Read a story for the fifteenth time without remembering a word of what I read.
  3. Determine whether my baby has a fever by kissing her forehead.
  4. Remember the specific preferences for each child's peanut butter sandwich (who likes crunchy, who likes it with jelly, who only eats half, etc.).
  5. Clean a face with my fingers and just a touch of saliva.
  6.  Carry on a semi-intelligent conversation with my husband while the boys repeat the phrase "poopy poop" on the couch beside me.
  7. Nurse the baby and tie someone's shoes at the same time.
  8. Change a diaper on my lap in a public place without anyone knowing what I'm doing.
  9. Sing the lyrics to the Super Why television show (and a bunch of others, too).
  10. Function on less than seven hours of sleep which included a 2 am waking to get the 5-year-old a drink of water.
  11. Pack the diaper bag with my eyes closed (and have what I need when I leave the house).
  12. Talk on the telephone while scolding the kids with my eyebrows.
What about you?  What are your skills?

    The Quiverfull Nursery Rhyme?

    There was an old woman
    Who lived in a shoe
    She had so many children
She didn't know what to do.

"Well...," says Owen.  "They need to move to a bigger house...and they can buy a bigger car."

    My Humorous Look at Motherhood

Oh where, oh where, has my quiet time gone?
Oh where, oh where, can it be?
Once a Coke and a book
    Was all that it took.
    Now I can’t even pee!

Oh where, oh where, has my tidy home gone?
Oh where, oh where, can it be?
    Straightening as I go,
But the next thing I know
    The floor I cannot see!

Oh where, oh where has my white bathtub gone?
Oh where, oh where can it be?
    Grit, grass, and grime—
I scrub all of the time.
That ring will be the death of me!

Oh where, oh where, has my tranquil ride gone?
Oh where, oh where, can it be?
    The chatter and talk
    Make my windows fog up.
And the speakers are blaring Veggie!

Oh where, oh where, have my painted toes gone?
Oh where, oh where can they be?
    They’re chipped or they’re bare.
    I pretend not to care.
I can only dream of a pedi!

Oh where, oh where, have my grown-up foods gone?
Oh where, oh where, can they be?
    A salad and steak,
    A molten chocolate cake—
    Replaced by macaroni!

Oh where, oh where, has my former self gone?
Oh where, oh where can it be?
    God blessed me with four.
    I’m in charge no more.
HE knows what’s best for me!

    Explain This One To Me...

Why is it that Owen must be coaxed to nibble anything new, can barely choke down his vegetables, and fully rejects meat...but finds delight in licking a handful of sand from the sandbox?

    The Daily Grind

I load the four children into the van and thread through a detour and then one-lane traffic to the downtown library. We park and as I lift Benjamin from his carseat, I detect the sweet, buttery scent of baby poop. It has migrated up his back and I have forgotten to pack an extra outfit for him. I spend the next chunk of minutes in the front seat wiping him down as best I can and reasoning that no one will see his stained clothing because he will be tucked inside the sling. I walk to the passenger side of the van to let the other children out and ask, "Where is the library bag?" as the realization that it is still at home by the door hits me! Without our returns and a place to hold the books we will inevitably find to take home, it is pointless to go on. We re-buckle with the promise that we will drive home, grab the bag, and come right back. As we pull out of the parking lot, a young voice in the backseat says, "Daddy would never forget the library bag, would he?"...for I will yet praise Him.

    Rejoice!

The season of winter coats is complete! Errands can be run with the kids "un-bundled"!
Is anyone as ecstatic about this as I am?!

    Maddie Tackles Theology

This morning we read I John 4:19-- We love Him because He first loved us.

Maddie responded, "He loves us because we are cute and beautiful."

Looks like our next lesson will be in humility!

Names Have Been Changed to Protect the Innocent

I find it interesting how dads and moms handle the little things in parenting! (This is in no way meant to disrespect my husband!) Take these scenarios:

    It's lunchtime.
Dad fixes Child #1's lunch, then Child #2's, then Child #3's.
Mom spreads peanut butter on Child #1's sandwich with left hand while slicing apples for Child #2 with right hand. Child #3's mac and cheese is already cooking in the microwave.

Baby spits up on parent's clothing.
Mom blots it from her pants with a wet wipe.
    Dad changes his entire outfit.

Family goes out for a walk.
Mom takes a leisurely stroll, enjoying the fresh air and the chance for the boys to yell without being shushed.
Dad runs at full speed pulling the wagon full of kids behind him.

Children haven't had a bath in three days and it's bedtime.
Dad says, "Oh well. They'll live."
Mom feels guilty, wipes everyone down with a washcloth, and makes them change their underwear to tide them over until the next "real" bath.

    Eavesdropping

Gavin and Maddie took care of Benjamin this morning while I fixed breakfast this morning. I overheard this conversation:

Maddie-- "Ben, God has the whole world in His hands. That means he has you in His hands, too!"

Gavin-- "No, God lives right here (pointing to Benjamin's heart) if you love Jesus."

    "Please, Christmas, Don't Be Late!"

    Christmas 2005
    Gavin (3), Maddie (16 months)

Disaster #1: One morning while I was still sleeping, Gavin tiptoed down to the advent calendar we had hanging on the refrigerator. He opened every door except one and ate the little chocolates hiding in each compartment!

Disaster #2: While I was upstairs, Maddie climbed onto the kitchen table and ate the candy off of our gingerbread house!

Disaster #3: Gavin climbed under the tree and opened one of his Daddy's presents.

Note to self: Keep kids with me AT ALL TIMES!

    Christmas 2006
Gavin (4), Maddie (2 years), Owen (3 months)

Disaster #1: One day while I laid down with Maddie (who had a fever) and Owen, Gavin took advantage of my sleepiness and went up to the "no-no" room, opened up multiple Christmas presents and started playing with them!

Disaster #2: As if #1 wasn't enough, I awoke at 3 am the next night to more sounds in the "no-no" room. This time, he had the presents out again, but this time was trying to wrap them back up for me!

Reminder to self: Keep kids with me AT ALL TIMES!

    Christmas 2007
    Gavin (5), Maddie (3), Owen (15 months)

Disaster #1: Finally remembering to keep the kids with me AT ALL TIMES, we averted disaster until December 19th. I noticed "things" on the wall by the Christmas tree but paid little attention. When Brian got home from work, he looked closely and discovered the "things" were teeny-tiny praying mantises that had hatched from our live Christmas tree! After killing hundreds (!) on the wall, packages, curtains, etc., we dragged the tree outside and went to buy a new one to decorate 3 days before Christmas!

    Say What?

One of the joys of being a mom of little ones is hearing the words that come out of their mouths! Their words are not always sweet and uplifting, but I love the ones that are.

Gavin and Maddie have coined their own phrase for when they want to clean something up really well. They'll say, "Let's get this as clean as a clean potty!" It does a Mama's heart good to know that at least someone finds our bathroom (shared by 5 people, 3 of them under 6) the gold standard of clean!

One day recently I was lying across my bed giving my aching back a break and talking to Brian right after he got home from work. Owen came up and took a deep whiff of my bare feet and said, "Umm...smell good!" Glad you think so.

Am I the Only Mom Who...

...has held a baby while on the toilet?

...has hidden a children's book because I can't bear to read it one more time?

...has gone in the laundry room to eat a snack so I don't have to choose whether to share?

...has pretented to still be asleep so I can catch a few more minutes of rest before tackling the barrage of questions thrown my way?

...has thrown my son's white shirt in the trash rather than bleach it again?

...can name every Thomas engine ever made?

...considers a day without someone crying a luxury? (Oh wait, I don't have those!)

    ...finds folding laundry relaxing?

...who is glad plants are not children because they would be sorely neglected?
